Boundaries of the experiment / Lucie Vítková
Performance based on listening to your own cyborg body
Lucie Vítková is a composer, improviser, and performer (accordion, hichiriki, synthesizer, harmonica, voice, and dance) from the Czech Republic, living in New York. In their pieces, they use combined notation, such as graphic, audio, text, and staff notation, to achieve a diversity of ways to communicate a musical thought. Their works range from DIY cyborg solo performances to orchestral compositions.
Environment (2021) is a piece for one performer, singing and playing the accordion, harmonica, and feedback. The piece is based on twelve graphic scores, which are studies of a movement from the center to the edges. With the accordion, harmonica, and feedback, I create an environment for the voice to come in and perform the shapes and trajectories of the graphic scores. The piece is looking for its resonant frequencies, combination tones and beatings, which are activated by the voice in relationship with the sonic environment of the instruments.
EARTH Eater (2022) is a performance using a combination of lights, synthesizer, feedback, and voice inside of one cyborg body. The EARTH Eater is a being with its own behavior. The EARTH Eater is a sonified presence.
The whole performance comes out of listening to its own cyborgian body. This listening generates movement as well as the movement generates sound inside of an interactive loop. All these forces are fueling each other while reflecting the reality of the situation of the performance which is not divided and participates in the form of the piece.
