Katrin Hochschuh & Adam Donovan: CURIOUS TAUTOPHONE – TENSOR FIELD ONTOLOGY

This robotic installation with responsive projection is as much an apparatus of art as it is a tool for music and an instrument of psychology and physics. Tautophone is a reference to the projective “auditory Rorschach” tests developed by psychologists Skinner, Rosenzweig, and Shakow in the 1930s and 1940s, while Curious here refers to the robot's motivation to explore its surroundings and to learn.

Patrícia Chamrazová: Resensing - Beyond Symbiosis

Patrícia Chamrazová: Resensing - Beyond Symbiosis

The exhibition Resensing is concerned with possibilities for an inclusive perception of the environment and potential forms of interspecies coexistence. In her ambient immersive installation, Patrícia Chamrazová continues her research into the fields of microbiology, technology, and posthuman philosophy. She suggests approaches to the experiencing of layered realities that interact and compete, seeking expanded ways of understanding aspects of various worlds that do not have explicitly defined spatiotemporal boundaries of their own.

Patrícia Chamrazová focuses on connecting technology, science, and philosophy in order to search for new scenarios and possible worlds as alternative futures through the convergence of several interacting entities. The word Resensing refers to the need to rethink established forms of perception and to explore new possibilities of (co)existence and reality, beyond the capacities of the senses commonly familiar to humans. The author thus presents a metaphor for the search for expanded ways of living without the division into human and non-human, technological, and natural. Would it be possible to contemplate such a symbiosis without the crisis aspects characteristic of the present, their negative effects, or apocalyptic scenarios? Can human society free itself from prejudices and fears of uncertainty and allow itself a moment of calm and an accumulation of unburdened imagination?

The exhibition does not aim to present an absolute or correct view of alternative posthuman worlds, but to introduce one of the approaches of world-building or what if scenarios and speculative fiction, which refer to the concept of sympoiesis, which refers to Donna Haraway's concept of sympoiesis (co-creation) and intertwined futures. These are used by the author as a premise to transcend the boundaries of classical approaches to symbiosis and communicate a dream of a form of mutual interspecies belonging and empathy. Through an ambient, visually harmonious and yet sensory disconcerting environment, she offers an open situation as an opportunity to experiment with the perception and understanding of entities that could become part of our shared reality in the future.

The video projection in the form of a digital animation presents the life process of symbiotic bacteria forming communicating interspecies communities. Technology and other organic fragments meet in a non-specific future space-time and inhabit a new reality whose character — utopia or dystopia — is up to the individual consideration and imagination of the viewers. The extension into another dimension is then an interactive sculpture in augmented reality, moving freely through space. The artist completely removes the virtual space - through 3D scanning and printing, she connects the machine, the human aspect and an organic active entity. In this way, she refers to the realistic stereotype of what a human being is today, which she allows to be transformed by the spontaneous activity of the mycelium as a co-actor in the creation process.

Can we escape from everyday patterns of behavior or hierarchies and move towards an acceptance of interspecies coexistence along with the expectation of overcoming the crisis state of everyday life? Will our, so far familiar, senses and more and more enervated emotions suffice for this? Patrícia Chamrazová invites us to cross, touch, look, read, and listen to the intertwining layers of realities, stating: "The future is like a dance of possibilities, and we need tools and stories to begin to see them clearly. Speculative fiction invites us to explore the utopian territories of the imagination, from the realms of fantasy to the depths of horror, all the while holding a mirror up to ourselves. It's more than escapism; it's a way to explore the future, critique the present, and suggest possible changes."

Patrícia Chamrazová is a Slovak visual artist currently based in Vienna. She graduated from the Intermedia Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. In her practice she deals with issues of technology and interspecies forms of collaboration, which she often confronts with her own corporeality or aspects of the boundaries of virtual and physical space. She works with different media, using the fluidity of video formats, 3D scanning or virtual, augmented reality and artificial intelligence. As the results of their extensions, she then creates interactive installations, often expanded by the forms of textual statements and object elements.
